Alysha Brown
Alysha Brown - Swampy Cree
Alysha is Swampy Cree from the Grand Rapids (Misipawistik) Nation in Northern Manitoba on her mom's side and English on her dad's side. She has been an uninvited but grateful visitor on Lekwungen territory for the last 20 years. As a proud auntie, niece, daughter and sister, her family is very important to her, including a very opinionated cat named Leonard!
Alysha has many years of experience in the social work field, both with community agencies and in delegated work, within the urban Indigenous community in Victoria. Alysha is dedicated to ongoing learning and recently completed a Master's degree in Indigenous Social Work (University of Victoria). Her thesis explored the idea of culture as the foundation of wellness for Indigenous social workers, and how connection to culture can profoundly impact practice. Part of this research involved composing a social worker honour song which can be shared and sung by whoever needs to sing it. Alysha is very passionate about mentorship and teaching, while staying current on new legislation, policy shifts and best practice. She can sometimes be found challenging the status quo and advocating for the best interests of children, families and communities.
In her spare time, Alysha paints: mostly floral designs on drums which will become available on this website as they're ready! Some of these florals are based on beadwork designs and some are simply designed by observing mother earth and having fun! She is also a proud member of ANSWER drum group and is a beginner Cree language learner.
